How Global Markets Impact Us at Home

Grocery stores and chains source their goods from all over the world — bananas from India, oranges from Brazil, Avocados from Mexico — year round. We walk in the door and see our favorite fruits and veggies as if they grew in our backyard. Of course, we can certainly appreciate having access to a wide variety of fresh food from all over the world. However, this phenomenon creates a few problems that are not inherently obvious to the naked eye.

Transporting food across the world comes with high costs and pollution. Some foods travel thousands of miles to their final destinations, while the hard laborers who pick the food often starve. The imbalance of food access, the gross waste of food and the populations that starve while rich nations “suffer from” obesity strikes a horrifying picture in our minds — and one that scientists all over the world say is contributing to global warming.

The issue is complex. It’s not one that has a simple solution, but we believe the local food movement, the slow food movement and the cooperative movement all could and should play a part in creating change.

We are thrilled to participate in several Hudson Valley farmers markets each week. We are now taking pre-orders for each location, with the exception of Pleasantville Farmers Market, where you can pre-order on their site.

  • Chappaqua Farmers Market: 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., 1st Saturday only (starting May 7)
  • Bronxville Farmers Market: 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., 3rd Saturday only (starting May 21)

• 2nd & 4th Sundays:
  • Irvington Farmers Market: 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
